RESEARCH PROJECT: Ferris Wheels and the Third Man

Ferris WheelAmong the large Ferris wheels built around the turn of the century was one built in Vienna in 1897. It is the only one of those large wheels that is still in operation today. Known as the Riesenrad, it has a diameter of 197 feet and can carry a total of 800 people. A brochure that gives some statistics associated with the Riesenrad indicates that passengersThe Third Man riding it travel at 2 feet 6 inches per second. You can check the accuracy of this number by watching the movie The Third Man. In the movie, Orson Welles rides the Riesenrad through one complete revolution. Play The Third Man on a VCR, so you can view the Riesenrad in operation. Use the pause button and the timer on the VCR to time how long it takes Orson Wells to ride once around the wheel. Then calculate his average speed during the ride. Use your results to either prove or disprove the claim that passengers travel at 2 feet 6 inches per second on the Riesenrad. When you have finished, write your procedures and results in essay form.
