Reviving Your Students Using CPR (Creative Presentations Regularly)  Part 2
with Alan Tussy

Thursday 8/13/20 1:00 pm PST: Click to REGISTER
Would you like to “breathe” more life into your lectures? In this ALL NEW 45-minute talk, Alan will springboard off of his July 21  Zoom presentation and share a variety of instructional techniques, visuals aids, props, jokes, and songs that can get and keep the attention of your College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus students.

In our profession, these are called “hooks” and it is good to sprinkle them throughout your lectures so that students stay mentally focused. For example, you will see how a familiar toy can be used to illustrate composition of functions and the chain rule. Other topics to be highlighted are complex numbers, systems of equations, exponential growth/decay, rectilinear motion, volumes of solids of revolution, convergent series, conics, the unit circle, angles, trigonometric graphs, and polar coordinates. You will also hear some snippets of oldies-but-goodies that can be used to pique student interest when you discuss acceleration, inverse variation, and limits.

It’s likely your take-away will be several new “hooks” that you can immediately put to use. They are designed to make you an even more interesting instructor and, in turn, can revive your students when their attention is lagging

The Best Source for OER, Free Textbooks for your Online Math Class
with Kathy and Bruce Yoshiwara

Thursday 8/20/20 1:00 pm PST: Click to REGISTER
The American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) has produced a collection free, open-source, on-line textbooks. Unlike many OER products, these books have been reviewed by an editorial board of math professors, so you can trust the content. Because they are free and on-line, students can access their textbook immediately, without going through their college bookstore or waiting for UPS. They can be viewed on any size screen, including phones, they are accompanied by useful ancillaries, and they can be paired with online homework systems. Subject areas range from elementary algebra through calculus. Register for this presentation to see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

About the Presenters:
Kathy Yoshiwara was born in Derby in the UK and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. She attended Michigan State University, where she studied Greek and mathematics. She did graduate work at UCLA and earned an MA in mathematics in 1977. She left UCLA in 1979 to join the faculty at Pierce College, where she taught for 33 years, retiring in 2013. In the 1998-1999 academic year she taught at Barnsley College in Yorkshire, England on a Fulbright teaching exchange. In 1996 she received the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Southern California Section of the MAA. In November 2003, she won the Teaching Excellence Award for the Western Region from the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). She is married to Bruce Yoshiwara and benefits from his expertise in all things mathematical.

Bruce Yoshiwara earned his PhD in mathematics at UCLA in 1988. He received the 2008 Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Southern California-Nevada Section of the MAA, a 2009 Teaching Excellence Award from AMATYC, and a 2011 Hayward Award for Excellence in Education from the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges.
